Presidential candidate Cruz hopes to gain new supporters before Indiana primary

FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) — Republican presidential candidate senator Ted Cruz made four different stops in central Indiana on Monday.

He is working to gain new supporters before the May 3 primary.

Cruz wrapped up his evening at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. He’s now calling Indiana a critical state to stop his opponent, billionaire businessman Donald Trump.

His campaign bus pulled into the fairgrounds just before 6:30 p.m. after making three other appearances.

Cruz told reporters before the rally, he’s all in in Indiana.

“We are barn storming the state, we’re on a bus tour, I’m here with my daughters traveling all across the great state working to earn the support of the men and woman of Indiana,” said Cruz.

The move comes just one day after announcing his plans to team up with John Kasich to stop Trump from possibly getting the GOP nomination.

“If you don’t want to see Donald Trump as the nominee and Hilary Clinton as the president, I ask that you support our campaign, the only campaign that can beat Donald Trump in Indiana is our campaign,” he said.

Hundreds of supporters packed into the fairgrounds to see their presidential candidate.

Paul Annee, a south side Indianapolis resident, said this was his first rally. He waited in line since 1 p.m.

“This is such an exciting time to be alive, you know and to see such a competitive race and as a conservative Republican to have a chance to come out and see somebody like Ted Cruz is such an opportunity and I just didn’t want to miss it,” said Annee.

Cruz took the stage talking about issues like jobs and security; even taking jabs at Trump.

“You know, it’s easy to talk about making America great again, you can even print that on a baseball cap,” said Cruz. “But the real question is do you understand the principle and values that made America great in the first place?”

Other Cruz supporters, like Bud, said he doesn’t have a problem with Trump if it comes down to Trump and Hilary. Bud said he would prefer Cruz.

“I like Trump because he’s saying what he’s going to do like build a wall, stand up to Congress also,” said Bud. “But he’s not proven. He’s saying all those things. Ted has proven that he’s doing what he said he’s gonna do.”

Cruz will continue his campaign Tuesday night in Knightstown at Hoosier Gym. The rally is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
