Interactive map: Bike to Work Day in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It is National Bike to Work Day and hundreds are expected to take part in Indianapolis. Even Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett is hosting a bike train this morning from Nora to downtown.

National Bike to Work Day is all part of Bike Month and there are several local organizations teaming up today to increase awareness and participation about bike commuters.

There are a number of reasons why bicycle enthusiasts say it is the best way to get around.

Money: From gas to parking, and even a car payment if you’re able to get rid of your car all together.

Health: Benefits for not only you, but your entire community, because having more people on bikes would reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Freedom: You’re much less likely to get stuck in traffic.

If you’ve got your bike ready to go and you want to join a bike train this morning, there are more than a dozen across central Indiana starting in communities including Plainfield, Greenwood, Carmel, and Pike Township.

Some bike trains meet as early as 5:30 a.m. and others as late as 7:30 a.m. Many have return times set as well so that you can ride with a group home Friday evening.

Local Bike to Work Day organizers also invite cyclists to a free breakfast, blessing of the bikes and more at the Indy Bike Hub YMCA Friday morning.
