Suspect wanted for robbery arrested after stealing police vehicle

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – A suspect has been detained after officials report he stole a Terre Haute Police car Friday morning.

The Terre Haute Police Department has identified the suspect as Cody Tryon, 28, who was just featured in a recent Crime Stoppers report by Vigo County Chief Deputy John Moats.

The original call was around 9:30 a.m. in regards to a stolen vehicle at 22nd and Prairie. When police arrived they found Tryon, who they knew had warrants out for his arrest.

Police arrested and handcuffed Tryon, and placed him in the back seat of a Terre Haute Police car.

While police were securing the scene, they say Tryon kicked out the metal divider that separates the front and back seats of the patrol car.  He slid through an opening and drove away.

Officers used GPS inside the stolen cruiser to track it to an address on Melton Avenue.

According to police, he was still handcuffed, with his hands behind his back when they arrested him on Melton Avenue.Tryon allegedly rammed several police cars trying to get away but police were able to stop and detain Tryon by blocking him in.

Tryon is facing charges of motor vehicle theft, criminal recklessness, felony resisting law enforcement, battery on a law enforcement officer, theft, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, criminal mischief, possession of paraphernalia and the outstanding robbery warrant.
