Powerful smell of decay puzzles Greenfield residents, investigators

GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Officials in Greenfield are investigating the source of a strong decay odor that’s attracted thousands of maggots and flies to a resident’s yard.

The smell of death was so strong that investigators believed a body was buried in a patch of dirt in the 800 block of Walnut Street, according to 24-Hour News 8 partner the Daily Reporter.

After a thorough search Friday morning, forensic anthropologists and coroners determined the 20-foot by 6-foot area did not contain bones, fur or flesh.

Thousands of maggots and flies had appeared over the last week, covering the ground around the area.

Dozens of homeowners as well as investigators remain puzzled as to the foul odor’s cause.
