Indianapolis buildings will light up red to support live entertainment industry

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Landmarks in Indianapolis are among hundreds of buildings across the country lighting up in the color red Tuesday night. It’s part of a push for pandemic relief for the live events industry.

Bankers Life Fieldhouse is one of many buildings that will be lit up Tuesday night from 9 p.m. to midnight downtown. The live entertainment industry was the first to shut down when COVID-19 hit and likely the last to reopen.

Live events normally provide year-round entertainment and employment and generate more than $300 billion dollars and employ millions of people throughout our communities. They also drive hotel stays and restaurant traffic and support hundreds of small businesses. The industry relies on large group gatherings, which are currently prohibited under the pandemic. This makes the time table of live events returning unknown.

Other downtown buildings going red include Lucas Oil Stadium, Indiana Convention Center, Monument Circle and the Indiana State Museum. We Make Events is putting on the event. They’re made up of various industry professionals through the Indiana State ALF-CIO. They are pushing for the extension of the pandemic unemployment assistance which provides additional funding to those who are currently out of work.

You can show support for people who bring you entertainment. You can post pictures or videos on social media using the hashtags #WeMakeEvents, #RedAlert and #ExtendPUA.
