Lyles Station gets national recognition

GIBSON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Slaves escaping to freedom using the Underground Railroad first called it the Freedom Village, but many know it today as Lyles Station, a successful farming community settled by early African Americans.

The small community in Gibson County is still farming today.

A flood in 1913 nearly wiped out the settlement and several families moved away from the area.

Now, Lyles Station will be in the national stop light, with its own exhibit in the new African American History Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.WEVV-TV contributed to this report.
