1 dies in fiery crash of small plane near airport in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — A person died Friday night in a fiery crash of a small plane, Indiana State Police said.

The crash happened about 8:15 p.m. Friday near Tower Road south of the Monroe County Airport. That’s west of Bloomington off State Road 45.

The sole occupant of the single-engine, fixed-wing plane, state police said in a news release.

The Monroe County Coroner’s Office has identified the sole occupant and pilot as 40-year-old Adam Clark.

Emergency crews arrived to find the plane on fire.

Joani Stalcup, the Monroe County coroner, said Saturday night that the person’s identity would have to be confirmed through DNA because the aircraft caught fire on impact in a wooded area. Stalcup said in a statement that an autopsy was done Saturday morning but the cause and manner of death remained as pending.

State police was helping the Federal Aviation Administration with the investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board tweeted Saturday that it’s investigating the crash of the Piper PA-32R-300.

The FAA said the plane was flying to the Monroe County Airport from Indianapolis Metro Airport in Fishers.
