Child in ‘grave’ condition after being found in north side retention pond

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A toddler was placed on life support late Thursday night after he was pulled from a retention pond.

According to IMPD, the 3-year-old’s parents called 911 just after 11 p.m. to report their son missing from the family’s ground level unit in the Brandywine Apartments near 86th Street and Ditch Road.

Upon arrival, officers spoke to the family who told them they found the back door of their apartment open.

The parents also notified police that their son is autistic.

Officers began to search the area with the parents and soon found the boy face-down in the water.

IMPD said the boy was rushed to the hospital after officers performed CPR at the scene.

Police said the family is French speaking and it just so happens that one of the first officers to respond is fluent in the language, which became imperative in acting quickly to find the boy.

“Everyone involved did everything they could to ensure the greatest chance for survival of this child,” IMPD Major Richard Riddle said. “We believe this to be a very, very tragic accident.”

IMPD did not believe the situation to be a criminal matter.
