Family mourns pedestrian killed in Lawrence
LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — The Marion County coroner has identified the pedestrian killed in a Tuesday night crash near Pendleton Pike and Post Road.
He was 28-year-old Aaron Cofer.
According to detectives, Cofer tried to cross the street several feet behind a stoplight when he was hit by a car. The driver stayed on the scene and is cooperating with police.
It was unclear if the driver may have been driving too fast or impaired. Detectives took a blood draw from the driver. The results have not been released.
On Wednesday, Cofer’s family returned to the scene. They put up balloons and a poster that carried a message of love for Cofer.
News 8 was told Cofer loved his family: his girlfriend of 10 years, his brothers and sisters.
“He was a great kid. He was well-known in the community. He had a great heart, and he was very passionate about people,” said Mechelle Moore, Cofer’s mother.
Since 2013, there have been 10 deadly crashes along Pendleton Pike. In 2017, Indiana State Police set up speed traps along the stretch to slow the drivers down. It remains unclear if state police area planning another speed zone.
While Cofer’s family waited for answers, they took time Wednesday to talk about Aaron.
“Aaron was a great man. He was a help to this community. This is a big tragedy of losing my son,” Moore said.
