Officials respond to Greenwood apartment fire

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) – The Greenwood Fire Department is investigating a fire that destroyed part of the Emerald Lakes apartment complex.

According to the American Red Cross, 24 families were displaced because of the fire on Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters worked until early evening dousing out hot spots. Residents stood in the parking watching as crews went to work.

No injuries were reported, and all of the pets were able to get out of the building safely. Tyler Burton pulled up to scene and noticed the flames shooting out of the roof. He got out of his car and immediately asked who needed help.

“I was intentional, I just wanted to care for the people and pray for them,” said Burton.

The American Red Cross talked to residents impacted by the fire to determine their needs.

“We just had an intake with a woman who said ‘I didn’t know you guys provided this type of service.’ We told her that is what we are here for,” said Lamar Holliday with American Red Cross.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters started digging through the rubble in attempts to determine the cause of the blaze.

“It’s going to take some time, we have a lot of digging to do through the damage,” said Chad Tatman with Greenwood Fire Department.
