INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana Black Expo’s Summer Celebration kicked off Thursday night with its annual ecumenical service.

Singing and praise filled the auditorium at Light of the World Christian Church on North Michigan Road. Reverend Doctor Elaine Flake was the evening’s speaker.

Although the service was meant to celebrate the event’s start, the loss of IMPD Officer Perry Renn was never far from hearts.

“Obviously we are continuing to mourn the loss of an excellent man, Officer Renn, and our heart continues to go out to his family, but we will continue to honor his legacy and I’m pretty sure we’ll do that tonight as we kick off Summer Celebration,” Tanya Bell, President and CEO of Indiana Black Expo, said

The Summer Celebration runs through July 20. The theme this year is “#good4in.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
