Carmel woman sentenced for Medicaid fraud

INDIANAPOLIS – A Carmel woman was sentenced on Tuesday for her involvement in Medicaid fraud in 2008, according to the United States Attorney.

Police say 54-year-old Khadijah Shareef had plead guilty to conspiracy to commit Medicare fraud in Georgia in 2002. She was excluded from Medicare, Medicaid and all Federal health care programs for at least seven years.

However, in September of 2008 Shareef began enrolling in Indiana Medicaid for both Indiana Home Health, Inc. and Indiana Personal Care. Shareef put her sister’s name as the operator and owner of both businesses. Shareef was given aid from Indiana Home Health Inc. and Indiana Personal Care.

Police served a Federal search warrant in 2013 for Shareff, who unlawfully received $720,358.08 from 2008 to April of 2012.

Shareef was sentenced to three years’ probation and was ordered to pay restitution of $720,358.08.

“Medicaid fraud cannot be ignored,” said Josh J. Minkler, United States Attorney. “The United States Attorney’s Office will continue to work with the Indiana State Attorney General’s Office to prosecute these crimes.”
