Talking Maple Syrup with the Burton’s Maplewood Farm

Tim Burton, along with his son Greg, has the latest info on this year’s National Maple Syrup Festival going on now in Brown County and some insights into one of the sweetest business in Indiana.

We don’t just put it in a barrel and forget it.”

The Maplewood Farms Barrel Aged Maple Syrup is Fire Infused to pull the trapped flavors from the barrels back into the syrup. This is a unique process that the Burton’s came up with are are becoming famous for.

Some of their Barrel Aged Maple Syrups include:

  • High West Whiskey
  • Koval Whiskey
  • Breckenridge Bourbon
  • Prichard Rum
  • Starlight Brandy
  • Kentucky Bourbon

There is an art to gathering and making the best maple syrup and some of it comes down to science. You have to know the biology of the trees that make the best sugars and how to perfectly time out when to tap and which trees give you the best syrup to sap radio.  The Sugar Maples on the Burton’s Maplewood Farm yield a 40:1 ratio of sap to syrup.  In other words, it takes 10 gallons of sap to make a quart of syrup. And it is all worth it when you taste the final products.

The Story Inn will be home to the Sweet Victory Challenge on March 7 and 8. Sponsored by Burton’s Maplewood Farm, the Sweet Victory Challenge is the Festival’s national recipe contest, attracting food enthusiasts from all over the Midwest. On Saturday and Sunday, maple recipes submitted as part of the national contest will be prepared and judged at the Story Inn. Competitions will take place at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. on both days; events are free of charge.

And don’t miss out on the Silver Maple Chefs Dinner at the Story Inn.
