Police: Marion bar held illegal sports gambling raffle

MARION, Ind. (WISH) – During an illegal sports gambling investigation, Indiana State Excise Police Officers ended up seizing 90.8 grams of marijuana and $9,400 from a Marion bar.

Excise police were investigating the Plymouth Club, on 2018 West 2nd Street, on Thursday evening after an “Sweet 16” NCAA raffle that sold basketball teams for $57,500, according to reports. Police report that the Kentucky Wildcats had been sold to the highest bidder for $17,000.

Police say that during a search, they were able to allocate $9,400 cash, which had been stuffed into envelopes with the names of NCAA basketball teams written on them, along with the name of a person.

Several invoices that included the name of the NCAA team, dollar amount, name of person, were also seized during the investigation. Police believe the invoices outline how much money is owed to the bar after the raffle, along with names of the people who owe the money.

Police also reported finding 90.8 grams of marijuana hidden in the ceiling of the bar.

Police did not make any arrests at the time of the investigation, however they did cite The Plymouth Club for preliminary administrative violations of promoting professional gambling, maintaining a common nuisance and hindering law enforcement.

The Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission will review the charges listed.
