Suicide help now available via text

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Community Health Network launched a new way to communicate with young people that are struggling with suicide.

The Zero Suicides for Indiana Youth initiative was first launched in 2014 to help youth access suicide prevention services.

Now, youth can use their cell phones to text HELPNOW to 20121 and instantly connect with a trained mental health professional.

“Texting is a familiar communication platform for today’s young adults,” said Indiana State Senator Jim Merritt, R, Indianapolis. “Community Health Network’s dedication and focus on this program will no doubt save lives.”

The text messaging technology immediately responds with confirmation that the text has been received. The mental health professionals that respond are trained through Mental Health America.

“The text for help hotline is a vital piece of our Zero Suicides for Indiana Youth initiative that anyone can access and use,” said Suzanne Clifford, Executive Vice President of Behavioral Health.
