Investigators: Child playing with lighter may have caused house fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Wayne Township Fire and the Decatur Township Fire Departments responded to a fire on Tuesday evening that may have been set by a child playing with a lighter.

The fire started in a home in the 2600 block of South McClure Street around 5:48 p.m. When firefighters arrived heavy smoke was showing from the home.

According to Wayne Township Fire Department Cpt. Michael Pruitt, there were two adults and two children at home when the fire broke out. A male was treated at the scene for a medical complaint.

One firefighters was checked out for a minor injury, Pruitt said.

No one else was hurt in the fire. Firefighters did rescue one cat from the structure. Three other animals were accounted for.

Investigators say the fire may have started by a one of the children playing with a lighter.

Damage was estimated at $30,000.
