Pence orders flags to half-staff to pay tribute to Lincoln

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Gov. Mike Pence is asking Indiana residents to join the state in paying tribute to President Abraham Lincoln.

Pence is directing flags at state facilities across Indiana be flown at half-staff on Wednesday in honor of a day of remembrance for Lincoln as the nation marks the 150th anniversary of his assassination. Pence says the directive is in accordance with a proclamation issued by President Barack Obama on Tuesday.

Pence also asks businesses and Indiana residents across the state to lower their flags to half-staff to pay tribute to Lincoln. He says flags should be lowered at sunrise to half-staff and remain there until sunset Wednesday.

Lincoln spent much of his childhood in southwestern Indiana’s Spencer County before moving to Illinois and beginning his political career.
