Ceremony honors 99 who died at work last year

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A total of 99 people died in workplace incidents in 2014.

On Tuesday, families from across the state gathered to remember the people who lost their lives.  They all took part in a ceremony held at the Statehouse called “Worker’s Memorial Day.”

The head of Indiana’s AFL-CIO, Brett Voorhies, says pushing for better workplace safety is the best way to honor those who died on the job.

“We must demand more workplace safety inspections, more inspectors from local, state and federal government, because too many workers are the victim of preventable injuries and death,” Voorhies said.

The AFL-CIO says, nationally, an average of 12 workers die on the job as a result of workplace injuries each year.
