IHSAA alters transfer rules

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The people who regulate Indiana high school sports are tightening the rules for transfer students.

Last season’s story of basketball star Eron Gordon is the most prominent recent example. He left North Central High School for Cathedral High School.

His family said they made the move for academic reasons, not athletic. So, they went to Marion County court to defend his plan to play. They won.

Monday, the IHSAA Board of Directors approved a new set of rules for transfer students. It is called the ‘Past Link’ Proposal. It restricts an athlete’s eligibility if he or she had any connection to a coach, manager or trainer at the new school.

IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox submitted the proposal on behalf of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

But, the association says the rules will apply to students in any sport.
