Paraglider crashes in Steuben County

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been called in by authorities in Steuben County to investigate the crash of a small aircraft near Orland Monday evening.

According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, dispatchers received a call just before 8:30 p.m. regarding a paraglider that had crashed into some trees in the area of County Road 650 West and State Road 120.

Rescue units with the Orland Volunteer Fire Department located the paraglider in a small tree line. They made contact with the pilot, Delbert Martin, 59, of Orland. Martin was treated at the scene and was then airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital.

The extent of Martin’s injuries were not known as of Tuesday morning. The cause of the crash is unknown and the FAA is expected to investigate sometime on Tuesday.
