IU student accused of attacking, shooting man

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) – An Indiana University student is facing charges, including attempted murder, after police say he attacked and shot a man this week.

According to the Bloomington Police Department, emergency personnel responded to the 800 block of South Henderson Street early Wednesday morning to help a man with serious injuries. The 23-year-old told police he was the victim of a shooting that happened nearby and that he was injured in the head, upper arm and lower arm.

The man told police he was in a physical fight with the suspect a few minutes earlier. He and witnesses say after the fight, the suspect, identified as 22-year-old IU student Kriegon Newby, left the scene. A witness who was with Newby earlier in the night called him and asked him to come back and apologize. According to investigators, Newby did return to the scene. It was then that an argument ensued and then that police say Newby pulled a gun from his pocket and fired three shots at the victim.

Police say a witness tackled Newby and held him until officers could arrive. A .22 caliber handgun was found nearby, and is believed to be the weapon used in the attack.

Medics transported the victim to IU Health Bloomington Hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to recover, police say.

Kriegon was transported to the Monroe County Jail. He has been preliminarily charged with attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon, intimidation and possession of a handgun without a license.
