AAA: Summer gas prices to be lowest in 5 years

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Gas prices in Indianapolis have been up over the last few weeks but there is some good news looking ahead to summer.

According to AAA, more people are expected to take road trips this year because summer gas prices are expected to be the lowest in five years.

AAA also says the national average will remain lower than $3 a gallon for the rest of 2015. Right now, the national average is $2.65 – that’s almost $1 less per gallon than a year ago.

In Indiana, the average is $2.59. A year ago it was $3.71. Drivers say they are cautiously optimistic about summer gas prices.

Leah McGrath says when it comes to vacations, a major factor between flying and driving is her children.

“You know if it was just my husband and I, but we have three kids,” said McGrath. “So an airline ticket times five adds up to be more than the gas prices but I do think it has an impact on families when you’re thinking about where to go and how to make that work.”

AAA says oil prices are up and that’s why gas prices are up.
