Police: Fugitive surrendered peacefully in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) – Wanted fugitive Marcus Bramlett surrendered to police after he had barricaded himself inside a home in Lafayette Saturday night, according to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department.

No shots were fired between police and Bramlett. He was arrested around 11 p.m. after peacefully leaving the home, which is located in the 1000 block of South 3rd Street in Lafayette.. He was transported back to the Tippecanoe County Jail.

Police arrived around 7:30 p.m. to find Bramlett barricaded inside. Officers negotiated with Bramlett for his surrender, and the Lafayette SWAT team was called to the residence.

Lafayette Police Lieutenant Joseph Clyde said, “The number one concern, obviously, is the innocent civilians in the area where any incident like this occurs. The number two conern is just the safety for the officers and the people who work as first responders who are involved. The last concern, but a concern, is the safety of the subject involved.”

Police said no one was injured during Saturday night’s incident.

Bramlett was on the run after attacking a sheriff’s deputy and stealing her marked car Friday evening.

He abandoned the vehicle in a wooded area late Friday night. Shortly after, Bramlett entered a nearby residence and took several items from the woman living in the home.

He then stole the woman’s car and drove it back to Lafayette.

On Saturday morning, he was involved in a hit and run crash on the south side of Lafayette. Bramlett, still dressed in a blue inmate jumpsuit, fled the scene on foot.

Sheriff Barry Richard says the escape now has the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office re-evaluating its policies and procedures.

“One thing I realized right off the bat is looking at protective cages for the units, have the prisoners be in the back seat of vehicles, and keep these incidents from happening in the future,” Sheriff Richard said.
