Police shoot, injure suspect in early morning incident

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A suspect was shot by police during an attempted armed robbery.

Police were called to a residence in the 400 block of North Hamilton Avenue just before 1 a.m.

Neighbors reported seeing a man trying to break into a duplex.

According to police, they heard multiple shots being fired and heard several screams coming from inside the house.

A victim, believed to be the ex-girlfriend of the suspect, was discovered to have been shot in the face.

The suspect then exited the house holding a firearm and was then struck by police.

IMPD Officer Chris Wilburn said “So when you’re faced with that situation, it’s very critical that we try to preserve life as quickly and as safely, but as tactfully as we can.”

The victim was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition.  The suspect in the incident is alive. However, he was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in serious condition.

As the investigation in the shooting continues, the officers involved in the incident will be placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure in such cases.
