Local LGBT community celebrates SCOTUS ruling
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Dozens of LGBT activists poured into the Metro Nightclub on Friday, where they celebrated the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage.
The event was the after party for an early afternoon rally at the statehouse. It was organized by Freedom Indiana, a group that fought against Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
Mike Barclay, a gay Indianapolis man who got married here a year ago, said that he wanted to get married much sooner but he couldn’t legally do that in Indiana. Now other American gay couples will not face that same hurdle.
“I think we’re slowly making progress and I think we’re getting to a position where LGBT people will never feel like they’re a demographic that’s been shunned or pushed away,” Barclay said.
Katie Blaire of Freedom Indiana said she was crying tears of joy Friday.
“It’s a dream come true,” she said. “It’s definitely not something that we expected to be moving this quickly but we’re so happy that it is.”
According to Blaire, there’s still plenty of work to be done to fight against discrimination.
Barclay said Friday’s victory is giving him and his husband some peace of mind.
“At this point, now we know it’s official. It’s done. It’s over. No one’s going to say that our marriage is less than anyone else’s,” he said.
