BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY,Ind. (WISH) – According to the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, teams responded to a call of a stranded kayaker just before 6 p.m.

40 year-old Brandi Colman was reported as being stranded in the Driftwood River near Heflin Park and County Road 950 N in Bartholomew County.

Crews found Colman just south of where the Sugar Creek enters the Driftwood River.

Colman told responders that her water vessel capsized after hitting a tree in the river.

Colman was able to swim to the river bank safely, but was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

Bartholomew County officials took this opportunity to stress that wearing the proper flotation devices while on the water is crucial and necessary.
