Congregation ‘grieving’ after worship leader is accused of voyeurism

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A former worship leader at a West Lafayette church faces two preliminary felony charges including voyeurism.

As the investigation continues, members of West Lafayette’s Calvary Baptist Church are trying to cope with the allegations.

“Shock and grief,” said church spokesperson Cynthia Garwood. “Everyone is just grieving, very sorrowful.”

Shock and grief, due to the accusations against a man who was once looked to for guidance.

“Because these allegations are so against biblical teachings, it’s a shock because he was very committed to his relationship with the Lord,” said Garwood.

Twenty-eight-year-old Craig Burden, who had served as a worship leader since 2013, was arrested Friday evening and preliminarily charged with voyeurism and sexual gratification with a victim less than age 14.

Garwood said the church was notified of the allegations Thursday – the same day the investigation began.

“Police got a report,” said Garwood. “They followed up on it and contacted the church because there was a need to view some material that was stored at the church.”

Garwood said police weren’t able to find any evidence indicating any wrongdoing took place on church property, but said Burden was terminated from his position Friday.

“It has nothing to do with our belief in guilt or innocence or of the criminal charges, but there were just things that could not allow him to continue to serve as a minister or leader,” said Garwood.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Tom Lehman said multiple detectives are working on the case, but was unable to release anymore information at this time.

For now, Garwood says the congregation is looking to a higher power in order to deal with what has happened.

“When something this tragic happens, it’s a challenge,” said Garwood. “Right now, we’re just really looking to God for answers about how we can handle this.”

According to jail staff, Burden will be held without bond in the Tippecanoe County Jail until his arraignment Monday afternoon.
