Hoosiers give back to Teachers’ Treasures
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Paper, backpacks, binders, folders, crayons, pencils and even furniture, Hoosiers really came through to help local kids and teachers be prepared for school.
Executive Director of Teachers’ Treasures, Margaret Sheehan called the WISH-TV Gr8 Paper Push a spectacular event.
“We are so thankful to 24-Hour News 8 for teaming up with us,” Sheehan said.
Teachers’ Treasures and 24-Hour News 8 partnered together on Saturday to make sure that teacher’s in central Indiana had supplies for their classrooms.
Teachers on average are spending $800 to $1,200 a year on school supplies.
A John Marshall teacher, First Sgt. Richard Woodcox said, “Not only are our students here getting to help and understand what Teachers’ Treasures does for their teachers but they get an opportunity to give back to the community and this is a valuable resource to teachers to get everything for their classroom and students ready for a new school year.”
According to Teachers’ Treasures, a non-profit in Indianapolis that provides a store for teachers to shop for school supplies, teachers spend on average $800 tp $1,200 of their own money each year on school supplies for students in need.
Nearly 2,400 teachers participate in the program annually. They pay $25 dollars a year to be able to shop once a month for everything from paper to pencils to books for students.
Teachers’ Treasures is stocked solely on donations.
24-Hour News 8 offered business an extra incentive to participate. Businesses that registered before noon on August 7 could win a $10,000 advertising schedule on 24-Hour News 8.
The winner on Saturday was Old National Bank.
