Family demands answers after man dies in police shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – IMPD Police Chief Rick Hite appeared weary as he stood near the scene of a police action shooting. FBI agents and IMPD officers were working together investigating a string of robberies on the North side of the city.

Agents and officers were called to Hardee’s for an active burglary. Officers later found Michael Henderson and an accomplice in a white SUV at Marcy Lane in the Marcy Village Apartments.

When officers surrounded Henderson’s vehicle, the passenger got out of the car and surrendered. After repeated requests, Henderson refused to get out of the vehicle. When officers heard a shot fired from inside the car, police and agents fired shots into the vehicle.

Sources within IMPD believe Henderson may have turned the gun on himself. Hendrson’s mother spoke to 24-Hour News 8, and in an interview she was adamant that her son would not turn the gun on himself.

“My son would never have taken his life,” said Henderson’s mother Rosalind Nettles. “He loved his brothers and sisters too much and me to take his own life.”

The Marion County coroner has not finished the autopsy on Henderson’s death.

In 2015, there have been 15 police action shootings, with six of those ending in death. Since 2008, there have been 30 deadly police action shootings. The list includes all men from various races, ages and locations around Indianapolis.

“This is hard for us because we didn’t anticipate dealing with individuals that would refuse to surrender,” said Hite.
