Hoops for Heroes

Some of the city’s finest will soon be shootin’ some hoops for bragging rights, as the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department takes on the Indianapolis Fire Department in a basketball showdown at Marian University.

“Hoops & Heroes” is charity game that represents Domestic Violence Awareness Month and helps raise awareness for domestic and sexual violence survivors. All proceeds from the event will support the counseling, workplace readiness, legal assistance and family programs at The Julian Center.

Competition begins Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Marian University Physical Education Center (3200 Cold Springs Road, Indianapolis), and doors open at 5 p.m. Prior to tip-off at 6 p.m., Darnell “Dr. Dunk” Hillman will host a Jr. Pacers/Jr. Fever basketball clinic. The family-friendly event also features Indiana Fever announcers, a free throw challenge for kids, a special halftime show, door prizes, face painting and giveaways.

The charity game includes:

• Four 10-minute quarters, college rules, real refs – these teams are playing to win!

• The real winner is The Julian Center and the survivors of domestic violence they serve since all proceeds from the game go to them.

• The Julian Center provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, employment readiness, transportation, therapy, legal and youth services. They even have an on-site IPS school.

• Tickets are $5, kids 12 and under are free

• Doors open at 5 p.m. Game should start around 6 p.m.

• Come early for Jr. Pacers/Fever clinic, face painting and to sign up for a chance at a time-out free throw competition and great door prizes.
