Community pitches in to help stranded sisters dumped at gas station

TIPPECANOE CO., Ind. (WLFI) – Two 70-year-old sisters are thankful for the Lafayette community Wednesday after the people they hired to move them to Kentucky stranded them and their belongings at an area gas station.

It happened at the Speedway gas station on State Road 43 just off I-65.

Trish Karczewski, 71, says she paid some former roommates $600 to take her on the 16-hour round trip from Monticello, Kentucky to the outskirts of Chicago to pick up her sister Carole Kick, 73, and Carole’s belongings.

But Wednesday afternoon, having spent less than half the $400 in gas money, the supposed friends demanded more money. When neither woman could pay, they dumped them and their belongings.

Some Good Samaritans stepped in and helped them move the stuff to the Immanuel Reformed Presbyterian Church nearby and got them a room at the Econo Lodge.

“God sent them to help us. All our belongings were up on the street,” said the sisters.

The pastor of Immanuel Church said their are good people in the community, willing to help.

“I was encouraged to be reminded of the good people that live in our community,” said Pastor Jared Olivetti of Immanuel Church.

Pastor Olivetti believes he’s got a plan to get the women back to Kentucky Thursday morning. But for more information, you can call the church at 765-320-0077.
