Emus escape from farm; one spotted on street

SEYMOUR, Conn. (WTNH)- A giant emu was spotted walking down a street Thursday morning.

The big bird was out for a stroll just before 9 a.m. Several onlookers expressed their surprise and amusement as the emu ignored them while walking on the pavement past some parked cars.

Police say four emus got loose from a small farm Tuesday evening, where they are kept as pets. Two of them were caught and returned but two others are still on the loose.

Police received calls Wednesday night about the emu, and tried to capture it but were not able to. It’s unknown where the emus are at this time. Their owner is aware of the incident and is working with animal officials to round them up.

The emu is native to Australia and the second largest living bird after the ostrich. They can grow to be over 6 feet tall and weigh over 100 lbs.
