Madison County unveils Indiana’s 1st pet disaster relief trailer

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — If disaster strikes, pets in Madison County will have a safe place to stay.

On Thursday, the Madison County Emergency Management Agency unveiled its new mobile shelter.

The $22,000, custom-made trailer can hold up to 65 animals.

The trailer purchase was funded by donations and grants from local and national dog organizations, including the Anderson Kennel Club, Muncie Kennel Club, Anderson Obedience Training Club, Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, Tibetan Terrier Club of America, Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America and AKC Reunite, the nation’s largest non-profit identification and recovery service.

AKC Reunite, the maker of the trailer, says there are 31 similar trailers in the United States. Only one is available in Indiana.

On the inside, there are fans, generators, crates, carriers, bowls and leashes, everything needed to help aid during the first critical hours of a disaster event.

The relief trailer comes complete with advanced technology to help track down lost pets during a disaster.

“There is a chip reader and a computer built inside. So if they have a chip this will help locate them,” Tom Ecker with Madison County EMA said.
