Indy zoo announces names for new lion cubs

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The names for three new lion cubs at the Indianapolis Zoo have been chosen, according to the zoo’s Facebook page.

The community took to the zoo’s Facebook to vote on several names picked out by the zookeepers. Those names were Enzi, meaning powerful, Zuberi, meaning strong, Sukari, meaning sweet, Mashaka, meaning troublemaker, Leland, meaning meadowland, Niara, meaning one with high purpose.

On Tuesday, the zoo announced the new names. They are Enzi, Mashaka and Sukari. Sukari is the girl’s name and Mashaka and Enzi are the two boys’ names.

The three new African lion cubs were born Sept. 21. They are the first to be born at the zoo since 2003. A female and two males were born to their parents, mother Zuri and father, Nyack.

The new cubs won’t be visible to the public until spring 2016.
