1 inmate released from hospital after drug overdose at jail facility

GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) – An inmate who overdosed on drugs at the Hancock County Community Corrections facility has been released from the hospital. A second inmate remains hospitalized and a third inmate was arrested for helping get the drugs.

Jail officials say the two inmates were hospitalized after they overdosed on drugs they smuggled into the facility while they were on work release on Sunday.

Medics arrived to the scene and determined the two inmates appeared to have used drugs. The two inmates were taken to Hancock Regional Hospital, according to 24-Hour News 8’s partners at the  Greenfield Daily Reporter.

One of the inmates told police that he used synthetic marijuana after returning from work on Sunday. It wasn’t clear what the other inmate used, but his behavior was consistent with the use of bath salts, police said.

Investigators believe a third inmate, who has been arrested, helped the inmates bring in the drugs.

The names of the inmates were not released.  Police say the inmates will likely face new charges following the investigation.
