Docs: Woman blows .247 after crash that injured firefighters, EMT

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Bloomington woman allegedly had been taking shots of whiskey before being involved in a crash that injured two firefighters and an EMT.

Twenty-two-year-old Kaitlyn Carlson was in court Tuesday morning to hear the charges against her.

Carlson faces two class A misdemeanors for operating a vehicle intoxicated endangering a person and operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of .15 or more.

Investigators said Carlson registered a .247 on a breath test.

First responders were working a crash around 7 p.m. on Jan. 27 in the 6900 block of South Gray Road. Court documents state that two firefighters and an EMT were tending to the drivers in that crash when Carlson struck the vehicles involved in the initial crash.

Carlson was taken to the Beech Grove Police Department. While there, investigators said she stated that she had taken two shots of whiskey around 6 p.m. She stated she was leaving her grandparents’ house to return to Bloomington. Police say that Carlson said she didn’t didn’t see the emergency lights or crashed vehicles as she came over the hill.

The firefighters injured at the scene were sent to IU Health Methodist Hospital were they were later released. The injured EMT was treated at the scene but not transported to the hospital.

Carlson will be back in court on March 8.
