Girl Scout troop donates proceeds to local K-9 officers

VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) – It’s a sight worth getting giddy over: Girl Scout troops outside stores and businesses selling those coveted cookies.

Cookie selling is underway and one Brownie troop in Vancouver is donating some of the money raised to the Clark County K9 Patrol.

“I like helping people and animals,” says Columbia Valley 2nd grader Taliyah Njuguna.

That is why the troop chose the K9 patrol as their charity this year. They were all upset when they heard the news about Ike – a Vancouver K9 who was stabbed to death last year.

The troop decided to use this year’s proceeds to buy new protective vests for the dogs, but members of the community beat them to it. But Clark County Deputy Seth Brannan tells KOIN-TV they are always in need of funds.

“The other things we use money for is to purchase new dogs, equipment, tracking harness, leashes, collars. Build new kennels for dogs when we get new dogs,” Brannan says.

The girls hope their Cookies for Canines program will get the K9 officers some help. Brannan says it already has.

“Thank you to these girls. It’s our honor to be here hanging out with them.”
