Skimmers strike again at two Fishers gas stations

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – A device used to steal people’s credit card information was found at two gas stations in Fishers this week.

A maintenance check Thursday at the Circle K gas station at 96th Street and Allisonville Road lead to the discovery of a skimmer device.

Fishers Police says that’s not the only place a skimmer was found.

Circle K found another one at the 96th Street and Olio Road location as well.

“I’m right in between those two places,” Fishers resident Randy Southern said. “It seems like we’re surrounded by it. It’s a well populated area, and if they can do it that quickly, and attach those things that quickly, it’s scary.”

“I don’t want people to have my information, or to use my numbers to spend my money,” Fishers resident Ruth Donovan said.

“Two in one day, that means that there’s more out here,” Fishers Police Department Detective Dean Mucha said. “We have not seen any additional reports, since [Thursday], but they are back in the area putting these skimmers back on the gas pumps.”

Officers don’t know how long the skimmers were there.

A skimmer is a device, placed inside the gas pump, which collects information as a credit card is swiped.

Officers don’t know of any victims. But they’re encouraging anyone who shopped there, or any station within the city, to check bank statements.

“If there’s any unusual activity there, contact your bank right away and let them know that your card has been compromised, so you can get a new card, and file a police report, if necessary,” Mucha said.

At Ricker’s, they’re fighting back against these devices. If anyone were to open the pumps, employees would get an alert within seconds. The alarms cost upward of $2,500 per location.

Right now, they’re only at the 96th Street and Keystone Avenue location. By this summer, Ricker’s plans to have the alarms at each of its stores.

“It makes sense if there’s going to be all this skimming going on to have a firewall like that,” Donovan said.

24-Hour News 8 called Circle K Friday to see if it’s doing anything different. But the call was not returned.

Officers said to avoid having your information compromised, don’t pay at the pump. Go inside, and pay with the clerk.
