Who coined the phrase ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing?’

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) – The Indianapolis 500 hasn’t always been known as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” It wasn’t until 1955 that the phrase was coined.

The phrase was made famous by legendary Indianapolis 500 voice Sid Collins. In 1955 Alice Greene of Marion Indiana, a young copywriter at WIBC radio, suggested stations carrying the race use the line “Stay tuned for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing” as they took a break for commercials. it’s still used to this day.
