FBI opens hate crimes investigation after Plainfield vandalism

PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) – The FBI has opened a hate crimes investigation following the vandalism that occurred at the Islamic Society of North America building in Plainfield.

The vandalism happened Feb. 29. A video shows three men spraying graffiti on the building. The spray paintings were laced with racial slurs and obscenities.

ISNA Sectary General Hazem Bata said the vandalism did not affect the relationship between Muslims and Americans. In fact, he said it made it stronger.

“The bonds between Muslims and fellow Americans are stronger than the bond of spray paint and brick,” said Bata.

The suspects have not been identified in the case.

This is an ongoing FBI investigation.
