Police investigating several vandalism cases on same block in downtown Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police are investigating several vandalism cases on the same block in downtown Indianapolis.
Police said vandals used a BB gun to shoot out windows. The damaged caused shattered and cracked windows.
It happened near East McCarty Street and South Meridian Street. One building was targeted a couple of times in one week.
“We had several windows on this building that were targeted,” said Pam Avenius, floral designer and event manager. “Our front window was shattered.”
You could still see the damage of the shattered window outside of JP Parker Flowers on Thursday. The flower shop still waiting to get it replaced.
“We had been hit earlier in the week. Also, we had one of our work vans up against the street that had the window shot,” said Avenius. “We have an event location down the street that also has the two holes in the window down there.”
Avenius worked at the flower shop for many years and said this type of crime is a first for the area.
“Nothing like this has happened in this area,” said Avenius. “The most common thing are car accidents on the corner, but no vandalism like this.”
Avenius said the damage is very upsetting to see. Not only did vandals target the front window, they also went for the side.
“I have no idea who’s behind it,” said Avenius. “It did seem to escalate hopefully now it’s at an end.”
Avenius said people living in the building also experienced the problem.
“I know the police and the owner talked to some of the tenants. We have two apartments in here a small one behind and one upstairs,” said Avenius. “Both of them had windows that were damaged.”
According to a police report, the 23-year-old tenant told police he was sitting in his living room when he heard the front window break. Not sure what was going on he dropped to the floor.
He told police he saw a dark-colored sedan driving off quickly, but did not see the driver. He said it had square taillights and back end. That incident happened on March 1.
Police said if you see anything suspicious, just give them a call.
“If you see individuals in the neighborhood that are walking around aimlessly looking like they’re looking for trouble they normally are,” said Sgt. Kendale Adams, IMPD. “We would encourage people to call 911 right away.”
