Car slamming into bus in New Mexico caught on camera

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A head-on collision between a car and an Albuquerque bus was caught on camera. It happened near Lomas and Girard Tuesday afternoon.

It happened in a flash. A black Dodge Challenger crossed the median, took out a power pole and hit a bus head-on. Inside, passengers braced for impact, while out on the sidewalk, the man waiting at the bus stop, didn’t hesitate to run for his life.

After the crash, passengers on the bus rushed to help. The chaos was captured by the bus’ camera system.

A passenger was heard saying, “He’s an elderly gentleman, call 911. He’s drunk.”

That female passenger describes the scene to 911. “Hermosa and Lomas, vehicle just hit a bus, a public, a city bus and the man is really intoxicated, we’ve got fluids leaking out of the car.”

According to an APD incident report, the driver told police he blacked out and didn’t remember crossing the median. He told officers he had taken some cold medicine earlier in the day. Witnesses at the scene thought he was under the influence of something else.

A passenger said, “The man is really intoxicated.”

Before police arrived, worried witnesses took him out of the car, afraid the power line attached to the pole he took out, could fall. APD did a blood draw at the hospital to see if the driver was drunk or high.

The driver because he hasn’t been charged with anything. But he has a unique name, and online court records show a man with the same name, has been arrested three times for DWI and even had his car seized by APD a couple years ago.
