‘I just want him to realize who his dad was’: Wife of fallen deputy speaks at funeral

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — The wife of Howard County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carl Koontz spoke at his funeral on Tuesday.

Kassandra Koontz addressed the crowd, giving her husband’s eulogy.

“I just want to thank you all for the love and support you have shown our family,” she said.

Before beginning the eulogy, Kassandra said that her son, Noah, was supposed to be at the funeral, but “he was being fussy,” drawing smiles from some of those in attendance.

The couple married on April 27, 2013 after nearly six years of courtship.

“Carl became the father to a beautiful baby boy, Noah Koontz, on August 7, 2015. The birth of Noah was one of the happiest times for Carl,” she said. “Carl was an amazing husband, father, son and friend.”

Kassandra said that family was everything to her husband, stating that he would do “anything for anyone at any hour of the day.”

An Indiana University-Kokomo grad, he graduated with a business degree in 2011.

“Law enforcement was made for Carl, he was dedicated to his career,” she said. “His fellow deputies stated that Carl was one of the best officer they have had.”

Kassandra said becoming a deputy was her husband’s dream. Carl was also a school resource officer with the Northwestern School Corporation.

“Carl has touched so many people, as you can see in this room,” she said. “Even though his courageous act took him physically, his legacy will live on forever.”

Kassandra ended the eulogy with a thank you and A request for those in attendance.

“I just want to thank everybody, and for Noah, if you see him down the road when he’s older, if you could just say, ‘I was at your dad’s funeral,’ that would mean so much to him. I just want him to realize who his dad was,” she said.
