Vietnam veterans receive warm welcome

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – If they didn’t receive a warm welcome when they came back from Vietnam, veterans most certainly did Wednesday.

An open house was held at the Fort Harrison Veterans Center where veterans were able to meet each other, and share stories and struggles.

They also talked about POWs still being held overseas, and ways to help bring them home.

“Because of the reception that the average Vietnam veteran received when we came home, which was not good in most cases, we promised ourselves and each other that we would never allow another returning veteran to be treated the way we were,” said Sammy Davis, Indiana’s only living Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.

If you are a Vietnam veteran, or know one, the Bicentennial Legacy Project wants to hear from you. They are creating a collaboration of stories and photos.
