One injured in US 31 crash between van and semi

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – One person was injured in a crash Thursday afternoon at the intersection of US 31 and 236th Street. The accident occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m.

According to police, the semi was travelling northbound on US 31 and stopped at a red light at 236th Street when it was struck from behind by a utility van. The van was partially wedged under the trailer of the semi and the driver was trapped until being removed by fire personnel. Witnesses also said that the van was on fire and the driver was experiencing episodes of unconsciousness.

After being removed from the van, the driver was transported by medical helicopter to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis with unspecified injuries. The semi driver was not injured.

As in all serious bodily injury crashes, toxicology tests were conducted on both drivers according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.

US 31 was closed for a period of time following the crash, but has since been reopened.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank several unknown motorists who stopped and assisted following the crash. Deputies said citizens left at least six fire extinguishers at the scene, which assisted in controlling the fire.

The incident is still under investigation.
