Germy gyms: Bacteria on exercise equipment
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A new study was conducted on the level of germs found at the gym.
“Fit-rated,” a fitness equipment review site, had an environmental testing lab to analyze germs found at the typical gym.
The results showed that some exercise equipment has more germs than a bathroom.
The test:
Swabs were taken from three treadmills, exercise bikes and three free weights from gym chains with locations across the country.
The results:
- Free weights contained 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.
- Treadmills contained about 74 times more germs than a public bathroom sink.
- Exercise bikes contained an average of 39 times more bacteria than a cafeteria tray.
