Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity kicks off 2016 build season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity started building its first home of the season Saturday.

The 2016 build season kicked off with a home being erected at Fuller’s Landing. The home’s future owner, Melisa Castro, was on hand to help. Part of the Habitat for Humanity ownership requirement will require Castro to volunteer 300 hours of “sweat equity” into the home, among other volunteer opportunities.

Castro and her four sons will live at the home, which will be located in Fuller’s Landing.

The Castro Family will also have volunteer opportunities at the Habitat Restore.

Castro completed the Habitat’s HomeWorks program which means she will repay a zero-interest 30-year mortgage to Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity.

“The Habitat team is excited to begin our third build season in Fuller’s Landing alongside hardworking families like Melisa’s and everyone committed to coming alongside them to provide a safe, stable place to call home,” said Justin Berger, Habitat for Humanity chief executive officer. “We are humbled by the support from corporate and individual investors and volunteers already signed up to work with Habitat to build on faith, build up families and build community together.”

Fort Wayne Habitat started in 1986 and completed its first home in 1987. They have provided homes for 185 families through the years.
