Residents escape house fire, rescued from roof

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Residents of a home in 1100 block of S. Monroe St. were rescued by firefighters after the house caught fire early Sunday morning.

Crews were called to the home east of downtown around 3:45 a.m.

When they got to the house, firefighters found the residents on the roof of the front porch. They climbed out of an upstairs window on to the roof after the fire started.

Firefighters got the residents down and had the fire under control in a few minutes.

The incident is under investigations, but a fire official at the scene said the flames may have spread from the kitchen causing heavy damage to the first floor of the home.

E. Lewis St. was closed while firefighters were on scene, but has since been reopened.
