Four treated for carbon monoxide poisoning; source not yet located

MARION, Ind. (WISH) — Two adults and two children were hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning but officials have not yet found the source.

The Marion Police Department said that a grandmother, her two grandchildren and a babysitter were all transported to Marion General Hospital at different points in the day on Sunday.

Around noon on Sunday, 50-year-old Beatrice Brewer was found unresponsive at a home in the 2900 block of South Boots Street and sent to the hospital. Around 6:30 p.m., an eight-month-old girl was transported to the hospital by her mother after being found unresponsive. Around 11 p.m., Wendy Hiday, a babysitter, was found unresponsive along with the five-year-old boy she was watching.

Tests of all four individuals revealed carbon monoxide in their systems.

The Marion police and fire departments went to investigate the home. A chemical test did not find carbon monoxide to be present within the home. A search of Brewer’s residence in the 2400 block of South Boots Street did not reveal a source of carbon monoxide either.

The two children have since been transported to Riley Children’s Hospital at IU Health in critical condition. Investigators will be interviewing Lakisha Boyd and Roger Culley, the parents of the children. Another investigation at the residence is planned, as well as a search of vehicles owned by the family members.

Brewer remains in the critical care unit at Marion General Hospital. Hiday was released after treatment.
