Columbus resident bitten by rabid bat

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A bat has tested positive for rabies after it bit a resident last week.

The Bartholomew County Health Department told 24-Hour News 8’s partners at The Republic the person who was bitten was able to catch the bat. They say this helped get the individual treatment quickly.

The incident occurred on Columbus’ west side inside a residence.

Link Fulp with the health department said the person is undergoing rabies treatments now.

Anyone who bitten must report it to the local health department so the patient can be treated if they catch rabies.

The health department has tested 29 bats over the past three years and this is the second positive test for rabies.
